So can someone out there in internet land give me the Reader’s Digest condensed version of the Federal Vision? I’d like to know basically what it is and what the two positions are (ie: why is there a disagreement about it) and I’d prefer not to have to look up any words to understand the explanation given.

So yeah…lite blogging today, eh?
In this particular presbytery, you are quite “stepping in it”–so to speak. Scores of people have tried to do what you are asking, but it is simply too complex of a matter, made even more complex by people trying to “boil it down.” And, depending on who you ask, you will get very diverse answers. Sean and I have each read hundred of pages on the matter, spoken directly to men on the committee who wrote the PCA Study Report, not to mention a few men who pubicly opposed it, and we still have questions.
It is a very serious matter to us, however, because Heritage split over it several years ago, before we came, and the congregtion is still suffering the devastating effects of that division.
Sean and I would be happy to talk with you and Craig in person, but it’s just too much for this medium–I’m afraid you wouldn’t be satisfied with anything anyone can say “reader’s digest”-wise.

Someone put a wiki on wikipedia; just search “federal vision” on wikipedia. My guess is that it is primarily from an FV POV, but it might be a good start. I don’t know what to tell ya on the no-dictionary thing. Didn’t they warn you about that before you moved here for seminary?

My church is a CREC church, and there is a magazine (awesome magazine, I might add) called Credenda/Agenda that just published a special issue on the Federal Vision controversy. The special issue isn’t up online yet, but keep checking http://www.credenda.org (and in fact, I recommend spending a few spare minutes looking at some of the past magazines, which are well-worth reading) to see if it shows up. I have to head to bible study now, but I can summarize the (already brief summary) given in that special issue for you later!

In my humble opinion, the entire debate can be boiled down to one word: SYMANTICS. Plus, maybe, an itsy bit of honest disagreement (but nothing to get too stuffy about). The “two sides” mostly just talk past each other.
