We embraced our mid-30’s last Wednesday (I know, I’m 33, so technically not mid-30’s, but indulge me). We went to see Over the Rhine at Blueberry Hill. The concert began at 9 with an opening act and OtR coming on at 10.
Clay and Renae were there and had scored some seats at a table in which we managed to steal relief every so often from standing (thanks, Johnsons!), but when 11 o’clock came, we were toast. Though we were enjoying the concert, we left early.
We did it. We embraced the fact that we are not in the stage of life that can run the club scene at 11 and live to tell about it the next day; we left and didn’t regret it. I’m making up for it by listening to The Trumpet Child playing on the OtR site. It is now officially on my wishlist.

pardon me while i snicker. over the hill? at 33? i don’t think so says the 60+ year old woman. You’re just getting to know what it feels like to be grown up with kids and all, that wear you out. you are in fine shape. m

Yeah, thanks to my back, I had to stay in bed at home and listen to OtR on my iPod. And the whole time my tickets to the concert lay on my nightstand, mocking me.
I did think about sucking it up and going anyway, but the way you describe it, there’s no way I would have made it.

oh man! a coveted seat! that is the way to full enjoy an OTR show.
we went to see them last year at blueberry hill & i love their music but was so tired of standing by 10:30 that i couldn’t wait for the deal to be over. i felt like i’d been working out for 1-1/2.
still, their music is great & it’s always a treat to see them live, me thinks.

I said the same thing at 33–it’s not *technically* mid-thirties. Ed disagreed. Of course at my last birthday, he told me there was no escaping it.

Well, if you’re “over the hill,” then we don’t know how to act our age! For us “almost 40s”, the key is to do all the standing up front… showing up v-e-r-y early to wait in line for the doors to open so that we are virtually guaranteed getting a table and a coupla chairs. Taking a nap helps too (I try to never miss mine), so we managed to stick it out through the final song, even with the 10 p.m. start!
Probably the best song you missed was a cover of Gillian Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Great song… Clay might have an mp3 he can send you if you haven’t heard it.

I last heard OtR at Cornerstone, about fifteen years ago. (I bought the album Bad Dog). I’m glad to see they’re still together.

I just finished reading Real Love for Real Life last night (awesome!), and when I “googled” the author, one of the top sites was a review you wrote a couple years ago. Small world!
