I have a bunch of hip college girls who special order verse packs out of cool fabric two or three times a year. I had to turn them down in the fall because I still needed to sleep in the fall in addition to everything else, but when I was emailed with their latest request last week, I said I would. I then went to work finding a website to supply me with cool fabric because I’ve had mucho trouble finding a decent fabric shop here in St. Louis.
I’m not a snob about many things, but I’m well on my way to becoming a fabric snob. Hancock’s is generally good for cheap patterns and on-sale notions and an emergency fabric need (yes, there is such a thing), but specialized retro prints? Nothing. The chain stores lost their appeal to me soon after I stopped working at ClothWorld and it was taken over by Joann’s, wherein it turned from a fairly decent chain fabric store into another craft explosion in a building with fabric thrown in for good measure – like a Hobby Lobby on speed.
Okay, so I got way off track there. Anyway, I sent the link to Sew, Mama, Sew to this college gal and had her choose some favorites. I then added in a few favorites of my own. The order came today and all I can say is that I so do not want to make verse packs out of these. I don’t know exactly what I want to make, but I want to make something else, something way cute, something I get to keep. I like the fabric that much. Never mind the fact that I have a floor-to-ceiling length shelf packed full of fabric I’ve been stashing away ever since my job stint at the above mentioned ClothWorld in, ahem, 1990.
Nobody can exactly mistake my blog for a crafty-blog, but every once in a while the bug bites and I must sew. Having super cute fabric really helps.
I love that site too. I’ve been into making aprons and I’d love to make one with some vintagy fabric!

i LOVE the fabric. are there no quilt shops in your area? they usually have that quality of fabric. even here, i have a few great choices of great fabric within a few miles…one in morton, one in washington and some smaller ones even closer.
i decided this summer that my fabric stash is my form of insurance for the future. i know i always have something to make (theoretically to sell) to keep me out of the “poorhouse”. in reality, i’m probably keeping myself in the poor house by buying all that fabric and maintaining it:) m

I was going to say- you probably could get the entire collegiate Navs to buy verse packs with those fabrics! I so wouldn’t want to give them away either. I’m going to make bibs for a friends baby and I may have to make a purchase from that website!

man! serious! fabric DOES make it so much better. i think it’s totally worth the extra $$ per yard to get quality stuff….and prints that you love automatically.

Of course I know a fabric emergency! Last week I just had to make a new laundry bag– I needed to make something and one of our laundry bags moved somewhere else (Tahiti? Guam? Sure as heck not in the laundry room) and ended up at the remnants table at Beverly’s. Sakes alive, had I known it was 20% off day I would have come home with a lot more stuff…

I love fabric. Sooo much. Just a few days ago I went into this AWESOME fabric store in Kansas and spent several months’ (gulp) worth of allowance on fabric. But I just couldn’t help myself. So I understand. Small pouches (with a zipper) are a good way to use cute fabric and make something small, useful, but also very cute. Have fun!

Sorry! I made up this pattern a long time ago and just have it memorized – no tutorials, nothing to show (besides the photo of the finished item).
If I ever make a tutorial out of these I’ll post it here. I don’t see it happening any time soon, though. I’m really lucky just to get these done!

Do you have pictures of the verse packets or instructions you could send me? I think they are a cute idea. I love you blog. It is on my favorites and when I get time I am going to add it to my blog roll on my blog. Time? did I say that? With 6 kids and homeschooling, being a foster parent, and a wife to a minister, who has time? LOL

Devona has a stash of great vintage fabrics. . . only one is listed on etsy right now, but I’ve seen another one (she’s making a sling for me to give as a gift!) So. . . you might want to keep your eye on her etsy store:
