Postmodern Preschooler, or Just Well-Read?

Assignment: Color (I changed this to circle) the item on the right which belongs with the one on the left.

Response:

Cow Jumps Over the Moon

Why the cow and not the stars? Because the cow jumped over the moon. Of course.
Works for me.

    Kkkkatie, Beautiful Kkkkatie,
You are the oooonly Kkkkatie I adore,
    When the mmmmoon shines
    over the ccccow shed,
I’ll be waiting at the kkkkitchen door,
(I had to do this, since I have sung that to her so often.)
    TTFN,

That makes perfect sense. And here in Mayberry, ask a young’un about the seasons and they will tell you that the seasons are Deer Season, Turkey Season, Bow Season, and Gigging Season…everybody knows it.

Ha! I totally know what you mean. This is why I always ask why they choose one answer over another instead of saying one is wrong. If they have a reasonable response, I’m always okay with that. I did explain that the moon could also go with the stars, but that in the nursery rhyme the cow *did* jump over the moon, so really both were right. And yep – could have made a case for other responses in the other rows too. She hesitated with the flower/bird one as well – think she was thinking the same thing you were.

I can still remember getting one of these picture matching things wrong in the 1st grade. We were doing “Circle the items that belong inside.” I circled the tree because we had a bunch of indoor ficus trees. And my teacher marked it wrong and it scarred me for life. Well, at least for the day.

I’m with Michie–I didn’t realize there was a problem until I read your note. I looked at each one and when I got to the moon, saw the cow, and immediately agreed with her.
Love the title of this post, too. I think it’s both.

it seems odd to me that the writers of this curriculum would give choices that are so confusing for a child that age. why not put a dog or cat instead of a cow and then the choice would be clear? or are they trying to get the child to think and discuss? the cow choice for children who have heard nursery rhymes and children’s songs would make more sense in many ways.
