Craig scored two tickets to see Celtic Woman at the Fox Theater. We sat next to Dan and Debbie Doriani and got some great tricks and tips to use on to train up the girls. Our seats were ten rows from the stage and I tried to cement what the Fox looked like from that level (we’re usually watching from the very top row of whatever venue we’re in). Good times, good times.

Surprise (to me…)
I was just doing a random technorati search for things and in that process came across a video I thought I *tried* to upload to YouTube last August when we went to Chicago. I didn't think I made it work – I could never find it. Turns out it was somewhere. Because I found it randomly today and also discovered it was linked by some random Japanese website. Truly, I am a moron.
The Fall of the House of Half Pints
Otherwise titled, Spring Breaks 2 (sort of like the original Spring Breaks, only without the travel and sickness). Go forth and pay your respects.
Music Discussion: The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us! by Sufjan Stevens
Okay, so I thought I’d try one song a week in this sort of ala cart music discussion attempt. This song selection was chosen by Allison. Click on the video below for the song and throw your $0.02 in for discussion. Also, if you have a song you’d like to discuss in a future week, let me know and I’ll add it to the list!
The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us! by Sufjan Stevens
Thinking outrageously I write in cursive
I hide in my bed with the lights on the floor
Wearing three layers of coats and leg warmers
I see my own breath on the face of the door
Oh I am not quite sleeping
Oh I am fast in bed
There on the wall in the bedroom creeping
I see a wasp with her wings outstretched
North of Savanna we swim in the palisades
I come out wearing my brother’s red hat
There on his shoulder my best friend is bit seven times
He runs washing his face in his hands
Oh how I meant to tease him
Oh how I meant no harm
Touching his back with my hand I kiss him
I see the wasp on the length of my arm
Oh great sights upon this state! Hallelu-
Wonders bright, and rivers, lake. Hallelu-
Trail of Tears and Horseshoe Lake. Hallelu-
trusting things beyond mistake. Hallelu-
We were in love. We were in love.
Palisades! Palisades! Palisades
I can wait. I can wait.
Lamb of God, we sound the horn.
Hallelujah!
To us your ghost is born.
Hallelu-
I can’t explain the state that I’m in
The state of my heart, he was my best friend
Into the car, from the back seat
Oh admiration in falling asleep
All of my powers, day after day
I can tell you, we swaggered and swayed
Deep in the tower, the prairies below
I can tell you, the telling gets old
Terrible sting and terrible storm
I can tell you the day we were born
My friend is gone, he ran away
I can tell you, I love him each day
Though we have sparred, wrestled and raged
I can tell you I love him each day
Terrible sting, terrible storm
I can tell you…
Bookish
Two things:
1. Janet of Oijoy Photography emailed me tonight to let me know her new book on sisters is now available from Amazon and will soon be at Target and Barnes & Noble. This is the book I mentioned earlier in which my girls will be some of the featured sisters.
2. Jenni of Dreams of Genevieve is beginning a book discussion blog. First up? Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. I read this book about four years ago and loved it. I’m planning to read it again with Jenni. Come join us!
Spring Break
On the way home from the farm this evening, I made a list. Craig got all excited because it meant I was planning ahead and he loves things to be planned ahead. Anyway, the list wasn’t exactly what he had in mind, but it will do. I had three questions for everyone in the car for what they wanted to do this week:
What book do you want to read/finish this week?
Craig: The Reason for God by Tim Keller, The God Delusion
by Richard Dawkins, and The Glass Castle: A Memoir
by Jeanette Walls
Megan: Breathing Lessons: A Novel by Anne Tyler
Maddie: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling
Chloe: On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Katie: Anything with Amelia Bedelia
Millie: “I want to watch a movie.”
What do you want to do/accomplish this week?
Craig: Catch up on seminary assignments
Me: Complete my assignments for Music and Theology and finish my first writing assignment for God’s World News
Maddie: Research the history and evolution of Easter
Chloe: Play games
Katie: Cuddle with Daddy while he’s home from school!
Millie: “I want to watch a movie.”
Where would you like to go this week?
Craig: On a surprise date with you on Friday night.
Me: Really? A surprise date? That’s where I want to go too.
Maddie: The Science Center
Chloe: The Worldways Children’s Museum
Katie: The Magic House
Millie: “I want to watch a movie.”
Music Discussion: I’m Movin’ On by Rascal Flatts
We’re concluding our music discussion week with my pick. I really hope the country label didn’t scare you off. Though this is the last song posting, please feel free to go back to the other songs and throw your thoughts in over there again. And, of course, this one needs your attention as well. I know it’s been a lot for four days, but thanks, thanks, thanks for giving so much thought to these music selections.
Rascal Flatts: I’m Movin’ On
I’ve dealt with my ghosts and I’ve faced all my demons
Finally content with a past I regret
I’ve found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I’m at peace with myself
I’ve been burdened with blame, trapped in the past for too long
I’m movin’ on
I’ve lived in this place and I know all the faces
Each one is different but they’re always the same
They mean me no harm but it’s time that I face it
They’ll never allow me to change
But I never dreamed home would end up where I don’t belong
I’m movin’ on
I’m movin’ on
At last I can see life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarantees, but I’m not alone
There comes a time in everyone’s life
When all you can see are the years passing by
And I have made up my mind that those days are gone
I sold what I could and packed what I couldn’t
Stopped to fill up on my way out of town
I’ve loved like I should but lived like I shouldn’t
I had to lose everything to find out
Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road
I’m movin’ on
I’m movin’ on
I’m movin’ on
Music Discussion: All These Things That I’ve Done by The Killers
There are some great discussions going on this week. Thanks for all the participation! I don’t want to stop the previous discussions, but am going to go ahead with the next song because Nikki is pretty much out of pocket after today and this is her pick.
All These Things That I’ve Done by The Killers
When there’s nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know – no you don’t, you don’t
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand
Another head aches, another heart breaks
I’m so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no
Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don’t you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
And when there’s nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain’t changing me
The lone-hearted boy I used to be
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don’t you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out, yeah.
You’re gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you’re gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you’re gonna bring yourself down
I got soul, but I’m not a soldier (X 10)
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don’t you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out, yeah.
You’re gonna bring yourself down, yeah.
You’re gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don’t you put me on the back burner
You’re gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you’re gonna bring yourself down
Over and in, last call for sin
While everyone’s lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I’ve done
All these things that I’ve done
If you can hold on
If you can hold on
A Primer in Biblical Discernment
I'm breaking into the middle of the music discussions here to encourage everyone to go read this article on developing biblical discernment. Come back if you have questions specific to the concept of developing discernment as believers. I'll find someone to answer them. *grin*
Music Discussion: Rootless Tree by Damien Rice
The original plan was to post one song per day, but it’s looking like Friday could be goofy for many in light of it being good, and all. I’m going to go ahead with the third song right now, but don’t forget about the other two. All the songs can be accessed easily from the main music discussion page. This song was selected by Claudia. Here we go!
Damien Rice: Rootless Tree
what i want from you
is empty your head
they say be true,
don’t stain your bed
we do what we need to be free
and it leans on me
like a rootless tree
what i want from us
is empty our minds
we fake a fuss
and fracture the times
we go blind
when we’ve needed to see
and this leans on me
like a rootless…
so f*** you
and all we’ve been through
i said leave it
it’s nothing to you
and if you hate me
then hate me so good that you can let me out
let me out of this hell when you’re around
what i want from this
is learn to let go
no not of you
of all that’s been told
killers reinvent and believe
and this leans on me
like a rootless…
so f*** you
and all we’ve been through
i said leave it
it’s nothing to you
and if you hate me
then hate me so good that you can let me out
let me out of this hell when you’re around
let me out…
and f*** you, f*** you, i love you
and all we’ve been through
i said leave it
it’s nothing to you
and if you hate me
then hate me so good that you can let me out
let me out…
it’s hell when you’re around
