Would You Encourage My Mom?

Nana

These are my parents here, along with my girls. My mom, Moleta, has to have a knee replacement surgery this coming Monday. I don’t know much about knee replacement surgeries, but I know about spending time in the hospital (via my kids), and know how discouraging a long recovery process can be (also via my kids).

I hear she will be sporting a cane for much of the spring season and you all, my mom is a fashionista. The cane look isn’t going to suit her personality very well (though if anyone can swing it and make it work, she can).

Anyway, I was just hoping many of you would come out of the woodwork and leave an encouraging comment for her. She reads my blog faithfully and I know it would mean so much to her.

Thanks on her behalf. And mine.

I am praying for your surgery. My mom also had knee replacement surgery and encouragement was a big part of the process. It will be so good to be pain-free soon. You will do great, especially with the help of those sweet grandaughters!

Hi Moleta! Sorry you have to go through this but God is good and you know He never leaves nor forsakes us – He’ll be right there in the trenches with you. May He comfort you and give you all the strength you need, and heal you quickly!

Moleta – My father-in-law had a knee replacement just 2 months ago. He still does have some pain, but is much more mobile now than prior to the replacement. We call him the bionic man, as he also has a replaced shoulder. You’ll be setting off all sorts of metal detectors! Sometimes it’s a not so obvious fact that the Great Physician has tender care for those he also has great patience with. I will pray for the skill and wisdom of your surgeons, as well as for the healing of your body. On a lighter note, I think you should find a copy of “Puttin’ On the Ritz” and work on a cane routine for your grandkids. Or better yet, maybe they can borrow your cane and put a show on for you!

WOW!!! What an encouragement this is for me.
1st Megan, Thank you for enlisting friends to pray for me.
2nd I needed all these comments of encouragement and thoughts about surviving this knee replacement. I’m dreading this, but know when it is all over, I will be feeling much better. I’m ready to walk without a limp and pause every 6 steps or so. I got a new cane. Now, how do I decorate it????
I just might have my performance for “Puttin’ On the Ritz” the next time I see you all. God Bless each of You

    Hey there Momma Moleta,
I know you are not looking forward to the process of becoming more mobile so keep your mind set on the goal of a better, more active, less pain (in the long run) lifestyle. You have lots of years of grandchildren and great grandchildren ahead of you and when we get to be our age we need every advantage to keep up pace! Make sure you ask for the sport model!
May God’s grace and mercy be with you before, during and after your surgery! May He strengthen your body and soul and show you His love through those who care for you during this season of life,
    Joan

My dad waited sooooo long to have his hip replaced because he thought he wouldn’t be as mobile afterwards. Now he wonders why he waited. He still kayaks and does everything he used to. Ditto Joan Ellis’s comments above. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    Mrs. King,
Prayers being said for you in Western OK. I know you’ll do great.
You know they make colored duct tape now. I think those would add some flair to an otherwise bland cane.

I just watched my neighbor take off on a bike ride yesterday – he has had BOTH knees replaced! My grandmother (she is older than you, but had this done years ago) has had both knees replaced. She says she only wishes that she had done it sooner. I’ll be praying for you for an easy surgery and quick recovery. May God be with you!

    Moleta,
Sometimes God uses times like these to slow us down. So take advantage of this “down” time and rest, read and enjoy yourself. Then I’m sure you’ll be ready to be on the run again. The cane should make you go faster! We are praying for a quick recovery.

Megan’s Mom, you are too cute! Just said a prayer now for 100 percent success during your surgery and for a quick and semi-painless recovery.
As for the cane, I’m a fan of stick-on rhinestones from the scrapbooking section at Hobby Lobby. Even canes need a little bling.

Moleta, I too am praying for a quick and speedy recovery. As I understand it, you just need to do the exercises a LOT. Grit your teeth and then the recovery is faster and more complete.
I also pray it will be a time that you can spend in the Word and praying for those beautiful grandchildren who are waiting for Grandma to play again.
    God Bless!!

    moleta,
you are in my prayers. i now work in a rehab hospital and have a clue re the “after” part of your surgery. you are starting a process that will not always be fun; will challenge your prior ideas re evangelism; will encourage you as christians cross your path and as God places you in the path of others who need to meet you. after all is said and done, you will be more mobile than you were before and grow in your faith…all good things. lately I’ve been reading Isaiah 43 and it has been very encouraging. you might enjoy it. martha

My grandfather had knee replacement surgery many years ago, and did beautifully. He recovered quickly, and has been doing fine since. (He’s in his 80’s now). In fact, he and my grandma are still very active, kayaking and fly-fishing among their favorite recreations. So glad he had that surgery!
Another family member has been avoiding surgery — I think she needs replacement surgery on both knees — and it keeps getting harder and harder for her to get around. She is in a lot of pain, but is afraid of the surgery (and, not being a Christian, I can hardly blame her; it is more than a little unnerving even for those of us who hope and trust in Christ).
All this to say: much better to go through with surgery than live with pain and limited mobility. You are doing the right thing. đŸ™‚
Praying that God will grant you peace — and a speedy recovery!

Hi, Moleta! A note of encouragement about canes: I’m 28, am graduating with my Ph.D. in August and embarking on a career in academic publishing, and have pre-lupus. I resisted the idea of using a cane until last Easter, when I discovered that a cane was more useful to me than the walking stick I’d been using. But the one I have doesn’t fit my hand or my style very well. So I’ve been window-shopping online (waiting until I can afford what I want), and I’ve found a lot of fun and elegant canes for fairly reasonable prices. There are even canes specially designed for ladies; I’m planning to get myself one with a black beechwood shaft and a chrome handle for graduation, but for the same price you could get a blue carbon-fibre cane with butterflies on it. There are also really nice folding canes for people who travel.
Here are the sites I’ve bookmarked:
    http://www.fashionablecanes.com
    http://www.canemart.com
    http://www.walking-canes.net
    http://www.canesgalore.com
But there are lots of other options available through Amazon and other websites. I’m sure you can find something that suits your style and your personality! đŸ™‚

Maybe you could decorate your cane with some kind of paper, (scrapbooking? huge selection!) That way you could change it up and keep it new. It could make a good conversation starter too đŸ™‚
Praying for a quick recovery for you.

Lord, I ask that the surgery will be a great success without any complications. Give the doctors the ability to do everything that needs to be done, and I ask that You would be very close during the recovery time. Please let everything heal quickly afterward. Amen!

Moleta, I know this is a scary and intimidating process to go through. I pray that the LORD would be present with you as the Comforter and Counselor that He has assured us He is, and that you would know His presence in a real and tangible way. I also pray that He would prepare the doctors and others who will attend to your care, and give them wisdom, insight, quick recall of what they need to know, and an extra measure of knowledge and confidence. And I pray that you would recover quickly, that you would have patience and perseverance during the rehab and recovery process, and that God would help you endure until you are once again able to jump for joy at His great grace and provision. Amen.
One of the members of my congregation had DOUBLE knee replacement about six weeks ago. and the process has been a heavy load of rehab but he is coming through it quickly and well. Through watching him, I have been encouraged at how well-developed this aspect of medical knowledge and technology has become– it really is a mature science at this point, which makes complications quite rare. Plus, the capability of contemporary Physical Therapists to aid in rehab and recovery is extraordinary, with an astounding rate of success in regaining full function. It isn’t easy work, but it is so worth it.
